WAITETUNA.
Social.—The usual monthly social and dance under the auspices < f the Wailetuna Social Club came off in the schoolroom on Friday eveninc, the 10th inst. There was not such a large muster as is usual at these gatherings ; however, those who were present seemed to enjoy themselves. Messrs A. and \V. Armstrong and E. Pretty kindly supplied the dance music. Excellent refreshments were provided and handed reund at intervals during the evening. Songs were given by Messrs A. Cogswell, W. Wilson, H. Goodwin «nd C. H. Sweetman, and were well received. Dancing commenced at 8 p.m. and was kept up with spirit until 3 o'clock in the morning, when the company broke up after spending a very pleasant evening. Magazine Club.—The annual meeting of the subscribers to the Te Uku Magazine Club was held at the Te Uku postoffice on Saturday, I Ith February. The following is the statement of receipts and expenditure for the year :—Receipts : Credit balance 31st December, 1897, 2s 9d ; members' subscriptions, £3 3s Od ; magazines sold, £1 9s 6d—total, £4 16s. Expenditure : Magazines, £3 lis (id ; stamps and stationary, 2s lOd ; paper for repairing magazines, Is ; cash in hand, £losßd-total, £4 16s. On the motion of Mr LaTrobe, the subscription was fixed at the same rate as last year, viz , 7s 6d. It was decided to sell the old magazines at 2s 6d per set of twelve. Mr E. C. Moon was reappointed secretary and treasurer and custodian of the Club's property. School Cummitteb. —A meeting of the Waitetuna School Committee was held at the residence of Mr John Moon on Saturday 11th inst. The Committee resolved to vote for Messrs Theo. Cooper, J. T. Garland, and Dr. McArthur, for the three vacancies on the Auckland Board of Education. A letter was received from the Manager of the Union Bank of Australia, in reference to the half-yearly payments for keeping the current account. The amount standing to the credit of the Committee being so Bmall, it was resolved to write to the Education Board for permission to close the account at the bank, and hold the money as cash in hand. It was decided to close the school for a short time, on accoun of the prevalence of whooping cough in the district.—Own Correspondent.
