CABLE SUMMARY.
The dredge Manchester, which left Liverpool for Lyttelton on February 7th, has put into Waterford for repairs to machinery. Heavy westerly gales continue in Britain and Ireland, and many wrecks pre reported. No news has been received of the overdue steamer Pavouia since the sth inst. A fire destroyed a lunatic asylum at Yankton, in the State of Dakota. Seven of the inmates perished. Captain Austin, commanding the advance column of Major Macdonald's expedition in East Africa, has establised a station on Lake Rudolph. Mr G. S. Titheridge, the well-known Australian actor, soored a great success in the title role in Esmond's new play, "Grierson's Way," produced at the Haymarket Theatre. la the House of Commons, Hon. Geo. Wyndam, Parliamentary Secretary of War, intimated that the conversion of all horse and field batteries to the quick firing system would be completed at the earliest opportunity. The American War Commission has whitewashed Mr Alger, the Secretary for War, and censured General Miles in connection with the latter's accusations against the Commissariat Department's arrangements in the SpanishAmerican War The public treat the Commissioners' decision with derision.
