THE WAIKATO HOSPITAL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sik, —Now that the news of Dr. Kenny's appointment to the Rotorua Sanatorium has been confirmed, surely some effort could be made and should be made to retain his present services. Perhaps a brief sketch of what Dr. Kenny has done for this district may be of some use. Dr. G. G. Kenny came to this hospital some twelve years ago, which was ,then an ordinary dwellinghouse, where the nurses' quarters are now. Was he satisfied with this ? No, certainly not. He wanted a hospital, not a cottage, and he suggested certain additions being made, and they were made bit by bit till it be came what it is now—a credit to Hamilton and to the district. It is hardly necessary to refer here to Dr. Kenny's far-famed skill as a surgeon and physiciau ; to the number of apparently hopeless cases he has pulled through ; the invariable kindness he has shown to all patients that have come under his care ; the great regard with which he is held by the nurses under him. And are we now going to let him go without a struggle ? God forbid. Cannot the Hospital Board see their way to offer Dr. Kenny some inducement to stay ? Surely they will take into account his twelve years'' faithful services, Cannot they raise his salary to £6OO a year, or let it remain as it is and allow him outside practice, say within a radius of 12 or 14 miles, and allow him to charge outside patients that come to the hospital a fee. This would about equalise the two appointments, and would keep in our midst one who has gained the esteem and affection of all classes he has come in contact with ; and I am sure that I am expressing the wishes, not only of a few but of hundreds of people, that we ought, in common gratitude to Dr. Kenny, make an effort to induce him to stay. —I am, etc., A Fobmeb Patient. Hamilton West, 23rd December, 1898.
