MAYORAL INSTALLATIONS.
HAMILTON. A statutory meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held at the Council Chambers last evening for the purpose of installing Mr W. Day as Mayor for tho ensuing year. There were present : Crs S. Davis, W. Crawford, R. J. Gwynne, T. Slade, O. Tippin, D. Salmon and B. Tristram. The Town Clerk read the notices of the election of Mr W. Dey, who was introduced by Crs. T. Slade and W. Crawford.
Cr. Tippin said that it was not the first, time, and he hoped it would not be the last, he would have the pleasure of welcoming Mr Dey to the Mayoral chair for the borough. It must be pleasing to His Worship to know that he had, after five years' service, still the confidence of the burgesses. Of course, there was always a small class of fault-finders, but the confidence of the burgesses had been expressed at the poll a few weeks ago. Mr Dey then made the usual declaration, and, in welcoming him to his seat, Cr. Tippin said he was sure His Worship would do his duty in the future as he had always done in the past. Mr Day, on taking his seat, expressed his thanks to the burgesses in again returning him to the office of Mayor, and to Cr. Tippin for his kindly remarks in reference to himself. It would not do in any society if all were of the one mind," as it was necessary to have some opposition for things to run smoothly, but he was glad to know that when the battle was fought and won, all were as friendly as ever. He again thanked the burgesses for their expression of confidence in him, and tho Council for the support they had always given him, and ho hoped they would work as harmoniously in the future as in the past. ("After the ordinary Council meeting, the members adjourned to the Commercial Hotel, where the Mayor's health was drunk.]
CAMBRIDGE. The meeting for the installation of the Mayor-elect was held at noon yesterday. Present: Messrs Bach (Mayor), Crs. Wells, Ferguson, Richardson, Clark, Davis, Kerr and Arnold. There was also a goodly number of ratepayers. Before installing his successor Mr Bach gave a review of tho works carried out during the three years he had been in the chair, and showed that a distinct advance on the previous years had been made. Although they had a small overdraft (£SO), he believed the Borough was now in a sounder condition than at the commencement of his term, and thanked the Council for the cordial support they had given him during his terms of office. As his successor they had appointed a man of ability, who was sure to do all he could to forward the interests of the district, lie asked the Council to support Mr Buckland as they had him. Ho felt sure all would go along smoothly and well.
It was moved by Cr. Wells and seconded by Cr. Richardson that the Council fully recognises the time and attention that Mr Bach has bestowed on the Borough business during his three years term as Mayor, and on the occasion of his vacating the chair tenders to him its cordial thanks, with best wishes for his and Mrs Bach's future welfare. Cr. Wells said go wherever they would-in the Borough they heard nothing but eulogiums of the manner in which Mr Bach had .conducted the affairs of the Borough during his term of office.
The motion was carried by acclamation.
Mr Bach thanked the Council. He said that if he should happen to strike it rich, nothing would give him greater pleasure than to return and end his days amongst them in Cambridge He then installed his successor, Mr W. F. Buckland, congratulating him on being appointed to the highest office in the power of the burgesses to bestow and wishing him every success. Mr Buckland thanked the burgesses for electing him ; he would do his best according to his ability. Several others welcomed the new Mayor, amongst them being the Town Clerk, who also spoke in tho highest terms of the courtesy and kindness he had at all times received from Mr Bach. Ho added that no one regretted the departure of the late Mayor and Mayoress more than he. The meeting then terminated.
