RAGLAN.

Mutual Improvement Society. The last meeting of the season of this Society has been held. Mr Henry, presided. The financial year was arranged to commence iu January. The Treasurer informed the meeting that there wai a balance in hand, and that several new Magazines had been ordered. Arrangements were forward for the holding of the picnic on Boxing-Day. The rest of the evening was devoted to the making of impromptu speeches, the question selected was " Is Machinery in the Main a Blessing or a Curse." Messrs J. N. Peg'er, Hibbs, Hill, La Trote and Roffey took part. Dining the season many valuable papers have been read and much improvement had been shown in debute, notably that on a motion of want of confidence in the Government. School Committee. —At the last meetiug of the School Committee, it was announced that the "Elsie Series," consisting of twenty volumes, had been added to the library. The black boards in the school were ordered to be painted and gravel put on the path and at the back of the teacher's house. It was agreed that the Chairman and Secretary should visit the teacher's house, with a view to aß-ceit-tining what repairs were necessary, make an estimate of cost and request the Board to take the matter in hand. The report on the examination of the school by Mr Petrie, was of a most satisfactory nature. Church Skkvici:s.— The Rtv. J. T. Wallis, Wesleyan Missionary from Fiji, who is on a visit to New Zealand and is at present staying here, has held several services. On Sunday last he preached in the Congregational Church to a very large and appreciative gathering. Mr Wallis is a son of Mr W. H. Wallis, now resident in Hamilton, but who was for some years a highly respected resident of Riglan, where the Rev. J. T. Wallis was born. —(Own Correspondent).
