SEVERE EARTHQUAKES ON THE EAST COAST.
EIGHT SHOCKS. HEA V Y DAMA GE S . (UY TEIiEGRAPH. —I'RESS ASSOCIATION). Gisi'.okne, Last Night. The heaviest earthquake experienced at Gisborne for years occurred at six o'clock last evening, being one of a series of eight, which occurred between 4 p.m. and '2 a.m. The ground rose everywhere in a confused mass, causing houses to creak and rock violently, trees to roll about like ships at sea, tanks to splash out their contents, several chimneys to fall, and generally doing a good deal of damage. The heaviest sufferer was Mr Whinray, furniture dealer, the parapet of whose two-storied brick building fell crashing through the roof of his fancy arcade, destroying a quantity of crockery and fancy goods. Mr Whinray estimates the damage done at £2OO. Mr Ford, draper, suffered damage to his stock to the extent of £IOO by water being splashed out of a tank on the roof of the building. Minor losses are reported at several other business places. Napier, Last Night. A series of violent earthquakes occurred yesterday afternoon, one of them being the most severe felt for many years. TAuro, Last Night. A prolonged earthquake occurred here on Sunday, but there was no damage or excitement. The geyser activity is normal.
