RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL.

STATUTORY MEETING.

The Council met at the Council Chambers, at noon on the 23rd hist. The Chairman.—Mr Conradi (the Clerk) took the chair, and called upon the Councillors to elect their chairman for the ensuing year.—Cr. Bankart proposed, and Cr. McGuirk seconded, that Cr. Mathias be elected to the position.— Carried unanimously.—Cr. Matlras, on taking the chair, thanked the members for reelecting him, evidencing asN their action did, that they had confidence in him. Representatives on the Hospital Board. Crs. McGuirk aud Bankart were elected. ORDINARY MEETING. Present: Crs. Mathias (Chairman), McGuirk, Bruce, Whiteside, Hewitt and Bankart.—Cr. Smith was granted leave of absence till 7 p m., on the grounds of urgent private busines». The Clerk also read a telegram from Cr. Lowry asking leave of absence, as he was unable to attend.—Granted. Correspondence.—Cr. Lowry re road to Worsp's section ; that he had seen Mr Murray, who had signed an agreement permitting the road to be taken on payment of £SO, and that he had agreed with Mr McLeod to grade the road. Letter from Receiver of Public Revenue, intimating that £2 \ot would in future he paid to Whangaroa —From Receiver of Land Revenue, forwarding £514 13s 6d, being amount of "thirds" due to OC' tober 2fjtb, 1898 ; als . the sum of £32 7s fid, due September 27th, 189 S.—Mr A. B. Wright, surveyor, wro'e approving of the specifications for works on the main road, West Coast, Awaroa.—From Mr Hursthouse, C.E., ' approving of the plans for contracts Nos. 70 to 72, and 74 to 77.—From the same, approving of the contracts on Raglan-Waipa road Nop. 79 to 83.—From the Marine Department, informing the Council that the foreshore at Te Akau belongs to the Crown, and that the rents are payable to the Consolidated Fund. Harbour Fund.—ln reply to a letter fiom Mr O'Neill re lease of section 85, quarry reserve, it was resolved that. »p plication be made to the District Lan-1 Registrar for the certificate of title to the section. Te Akau Wiiark.—The Clerk wa& instructed to write to the Marine Department re £5 rent paid for Te Akau wharf, and pointing out that there is now a Harbour Board. The Council adjourned at 9 p.m. TIIDTSDAY. The Council met at 10 a.m., all the Councillors, with the exception of Cr. Lowry, being present. Correspondence. A considerable number of letters complaining of the valuation of their property was received. —lt was resolved that all alterations in valuation be referred to the Valuation Department. Unclaimed Land.—lt was resolved that Sections 25 and 26, Kanroa, 140 acres be brought under the Unclaimed Land Act. Damage to Pijn't.—lt was resolved that a demand be made upon A. Lipwood

for 7s Grl for damages to Huntly Punt. Application for Road.—D F. Rollo wrote applying for road giving outlet to creamery through Sections 212 and 226, Block XI , A'exandra. —Resolved that the engineer he instructed to report on the road. H. and C. A. SUBSIDY.—It was resolved to pay over £IOO now due by the Council. Road Closing —ln consequence of a letter from Col. Burton protesting against the closing of roads through Section 109, Pirongia, it was resolved to instruct the engineer to report on same after his visit to the district. Expi-:>DiruKE of Tjiikds.—Mr J. C. Storer's application for portion of thirds to h'i expended on road in Block XT., Section 11, Awaroa, was referred to Or. Lowry to report, as was also his letter re road being taken through 1). Murray's land. Tuakau Punt.—The clerk was instructed to furnir-h detail < of money expended on engineering in ennectinn with the Tuakau Punt to the Pukekohe East Road Board. Access to Roads —An application was received from A. J. Tissam, asking for access to a road from his land, Sections 180, ,187 and ISB, Waingaro. —Reply directed that the Conned will consider the matter. Road DEVIATION.—A letter was received from several setters at Ruapuke, re deviation of road through Mr Duncan's property, Waimaori Hill, offering to give labour and money for same.—lt was resolved to subsidise the work pro posed, if Mr Duncan agrees to pioposed work.

Couxti Surveyor.—lt was "resolved to accept Mr E. dc 0. Drury's offer to act as surveyor to the county at ichcdule prices Ngaruawahia Bridge—A lettpr'was received from Mr Mueller, Chief Surveyor, re the openirg ond maintenance of this bridge and by-laws to regulate traffic.—lt was resolved to request the Ngaruawahii Town Bond to take control of the. bridge and to ask the Wnipa County Council to concur in this arrangement.—A letter was dc It with from the Chairman of the Ngaruawalua Town Board, re seeming .vant of courtesy in not inviting Councillors to the opening ceremony.—lt was unanimously resolved that the Clerk lie instructed to Write to the Nga.ruawn.hia Town Board that in the opinion of the Council the Chairman ot tiie Raglan County Council should have been invited. Cycling Posts.—The Clerk was instructed to write to the New Zealand Cycling Club, giving information as to finger-posts required in the county. Wool Charges.—A letter was rpad Irom Mr Ransom, manager of the Northern Steam Shipping Company, re excessive charges on wool for wharfage (1s per bale), the charge at other ports only being 3d.—The Clerk was instructed to reply that the Harbour Boird do not see their way to reduce the charge on wool. Valuation Rolls.—A. protest was ceived from the Taranaki County Conned, protesting against the cost of valuation Fornieily, it cost £270 ; the Government valuation had cost £1250. Cr. Hewett moved, " That the Council desire to protest against the excessive charges made by the Valuation Department for the rolls supplied, as the information contained therein is faulty. "—The resolution, on being put, was lost, the voting being : For—The Chairman and Crs. Whiteside and Hewett. Against—Crs. Bruce, Bank art, McGuirk and Smith. Balances, Riding account-.—Cr. : Te Akau, £53 15s 7d. Dr. : Karamu, £56 15s ; Onewhero, £OO 15s lOd ; Pirougia, £2S 15s 3d ; Karioi, £471 Is ; Waingaro, £-200 4s 'id ; V\ hangape, £9B 4s ; Bunk overdraft. £1,422 lis id. The Council at 9 p. in. adjourned till Friday morning.
