Heavy snowstorms are raging in the north of England. The radways are blocked. Baldwin's hotel and theatre at San Francisco have been burned, and twenty perished, including four women. The Kaiser's protectorate over Catholics in the East has offended the other religious denominations at Jerusalem. Austria has withdrawn the licenses granted to the British Bible Society. An appeal has been lodged against this action.
Russia is likely to exact compensation from the Greek Church for the gift to the German Emperor of the site of the Virgin's house. Prince George and the Christians in Crete are endeavouring to prevent the inclusion in the Cretan colours of any fragment of the Turkish flag. The Austrian Emperor has given 20,000 francs to the poor of Geneva, in acknowledgment of the sympathy displayed there towards Austria on the occasion of the assassination of the Empress.
The Daily Mail states that Italy is seeking for the extension of the agreement entered into between Great Britain, Austria and Italy in 1895, relating to the Mediterranean and to all international questions. Mr Rooseveldt, the new Governor of New York, has made some sensational disclosures regarding the inadequacy of the arrangements for the American troops at Santiago. In his revelations, Mr Rooseveldt attacks his own political party.
