To-morrow (Sunday), 20th November, will be the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Rangiriri, which was fought ou 20th November, 1863.
Owing to ill-health, Dr. Murdoch will be absent from Cambridge for a short while. He has arranged with Dr. Brewis to take charge of his practice until his return.
His Lordship the Right lie v. Dr. Lenihan will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation at Ngaruawahia to-morrow (Sunday), at 4.30 p.m. He will also give the Benediction. The Secretary of the Waikato Hospital desires to thank Messrs F. W. Burnett, Walton, and C. Taylor, Paeroa, for a gift of books and illustrated papers for the institution.
Tn consequence of the anniversary service at Trinity Church, Cambridge, to - morrow, the Presbyterian service at Tauwhare will be held at half past 2 o'clock, instead of at 11. A fresh Compensation Court is to be constituted to hear the Hatuma Estate case de novo. Each side will appoint a new assessor, and another judge will be appointed to act as President of the Court. It is expected the re-hearing of the case will take place early next year.
Two nominations have been received for the Cambridge ■ Mayoralty, viz: William Francis Buckland, nominated by James Hally and J. R. S. Richardson, and William Escott, nominated by William Rout and John Ferguson. The election will be held on the 30th of this month.
The Stipendiary Magistrate,- together with Messrs W. H. Mandeno and J. B. Teasdale, assessors, sat at Te Awamutu on Wednesday, to hear any objections to the Mangahoi Drainage Board rate list. As there were no objectors the roll was signed. The Returning Officer appoared on behalf of the Board.
Mr Bevins, representing Messrs Weddell and Co., the well-known meat salesmen ot London, will shortly pay Waikato a visit. We understand he will attend the next meeting of the Waikato Farmers' Club, and is prepared to make contracts for a supply of fat lambs, extending over a period of twelve months, from December next.
The Hamilton Brass Band will (weather permitting) render the following programme in Victoria-street this evening, commencing at half-past seven, viz. : Quickstep, " Ambervale" ; polka, " Randolph " ; fantasia, " Austral " ; valse, " Universal Brotherhood " ; march, " Klondyke " ; descriptive fantasia on " The Young Recruit " ; schottische, " Laura " ; overture, •' Isolda." The fine fat ox shown by Mr Ed. Allen, of Pukerimu, and which took first prize both at the late Waikato and Auckland Shows, was sold by Messrs A. Buckland and Sons on Tuesday last, and realised £ls. The weight of the animal has been variously estimated at from 1,6001 bto 1.9001 b. Messrs Hellaby Bros.', the well-known butchers, of Auckland, were the purchasers, and they have promised to publish the weight when ascertained.
At the Magistrate's Court, Te Awamutu, on Wednesday, before Captain Jackson, S.M , the following cases were dealt with :C. J. Elmsly v. Hori Walton Grey ; Mr Gresham for plaintiff; judgment for £1 8s 10(1, with costs (£1 6s 6d).—Mrs A. E. Aubiu v. Charles Drabble, judgment; summons; Mr Gresham for plaintiff; adjourned to 21st Ddcember, on the ground that defendant's expenses had not been sent to him.—P. McDonnell v. Noe: judgment for £5 los 5d and costs (£1 14s 6d).
Mr J. T. Tracy, of Wellington, has returned from Klondyke. He gives a most repelling account of the new goldfield, and earnestly advises everyone to keep away. There are only a few good claims, and he accuses the officials of sending spies out to investigate as to new applications, and that, if they find the prospects good, the applicants were informed that the claims have been recorded some time before. On his trip up 1400 boats left Lake Bennett together. No less than ten New Zealanders, whose names he does not give, were drowned in the rapids, and this was only about a twentieth of the number lost on that trip alone. A great many, disgusted with the place, tried to get back to Yukon, but numbers were drowned, and many a wife or friend thinks those are still prospecting in the Yukon Valley whom they will never see again.
Capt. Reid, of the Waikato Mounted Rifles, will be at Ohaupo this evening, at 7 p.m., far the purpose of enrolling volunteers for this corps.
Mr Spragg will meet the milk suppliers at the Hamilton Factory this morning, and will proceed to Te Aroha by the midday train, for the purpose of meeting the suppliers iu that district. Mr and Mrs H. J. Paton, of Hautapu, who left a few months ago on a visit to the Old Country, returned to Waikato on Wednesday last, and are at present stayina with Mr W. Main, at Fencourt. Both are looking very well after their trip.
