POLITICAL NOTES.
(BY TELEGRAPH--SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT) Wellington, Last Night. CABINET EtECONSTR UCTION.
Ir is still regarded n.s highly probable that there will be two vacant portfolios to fill as soon as the session closes. Mr Thompson's early retirement from the Cabinet is now regarded as absolutely settled, and the precarious state of Mr John McKenzie'a health is also extremely likely to lead to his resignation. 1 understand that Mr McKenzie'a own wish is to retire into private life, hut the Premier naturally desires him to remain in office as long as possible. There is no doubt whatever, th.it it would he an exceedingly difficult job to replace the present Minister for Lands, who, with all his faults, is thoroughly acquainted with the details of his Department, and is essf-ntially a fighter. Mr MeKenzie was seriously ill aaain last night, and was compelled to retire from the House in consequence. CLOSING THE SESSION.
It is confidently expected now that the session will close to-morrow night. Several members have already left Wellington, «nd a good many others intend taking their departure during to-morrow and Sunday.
