The Tuapeka election must be taken as a clear indication that Seddonism is on the wane. It poiDts to the fact that for a man to declare himself a supporter of the present Government s to court certain defeat. It may be iiaid that if there had been a second ballot the result would have been different ; this might have been the case, but that difference would not have been that Mr Symes, the only candidate pledged to support the Government, would have jumped from the bottom to the top of the poll, where the name of the Opposition candidate stands. There were four candidates : —A pronounced Oppositionist scored 1118"; an Independent 844; an Independant Liberal, that is to say—a Liberal, and not a Seddonite, 504 ; a Government supporter 296. All the second ballots that could he taken between now aud Christmas could not alter the fact that the Government candidate was disastrously defeated, and was defeated mainly from the fact that the word Government was tacked to his name.
