Straying Cattle.—The attention of the Board was forcibly called to the nuisance caused by horses and cattle straying at large on the roads in the district. Among the horses are several entires, the owners of which are liable to a heavy penalty for allowing them to roam at large. If these horses are not removed, proceedings will be taken. The nuisance caused by stray cattle may be guessed from the information the Board received that one person alone had some two or three hundred head of cattle running at large on the road, mostly on the eastern side of the district. One man reported to the Board that he counted 54 head of these stray cattle wandering on about two miles of road. So many cattle straying on the roads cause a great deal of trouble to people driving cattle along the road. It was stated to the Board that the damage which these stray cattle do iu tilling in road drains costs the Board a couple of hundred pounds every year to repair. These cattle too, in some mysterious way, are said to find their way into people's paddocks. The Board instructed the clerk to write to the reputed owner ot the large mob of cattle referred to and request him to keep them from straying at large on the roads iu the Waitoa Road District, otherwise the Board will take proceedings to abate the nuisance.
