The Waikato Argus GEORGE EDGECUMBE, Proprietor. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1898.
Thursday next (Show Day) will be observed as a special Bank holiday in Waikato. A meeting of the Waipa Racing Club will be held this evening at the Commercial Hotel, Te Awamutu. A polo match will be played at Cambridge, on Saturday next, in Mr J. Taylor's paddock. The game will commence at 4 p.m. The Very Rev. Father Ginaty, S.M., will open a Mission at Ngaruavvahia, on Sunday evening next, commencing at 7 o'clock. It is notified in this issue that Mr Perkins (of the firm of Hall and Perkins, auctioneers, Auckland), will pay a business visit to Waikato next week. MrW. J. Hunter will hold his special spring cattle sale at Ohaupo Yards on Tuesday, November Ist, and will offer upwards of 800 head of wellbred cattle. The sale will commence at 12.30 o'clock. Commissioner Tunbridge says the statements regarding transference of police inspectors, and the permanent appointment of Inspector Cullen to the Auckland district, are premature. Nothing official will be made known on the subject until the Hon. T. Thompson makes his Ministerial statement when the Police Estimates come before the House.
We notice that Mr S. Harker, watchmaker and jeweller, has moved into the shop in Victoria-street, Hamilton, lately occupied by Mr J. T. Home. Considerable improvements are being effected in (he building to render it suitable ior his requirements.
Mr J. W. Ellis, chairman of the Otorohanga School Committee, has written to the Te Awamutu Theatre Royal Company, heartily thanking them tor the entertainment given in aid of the school prize fund. The committee netted £2 from the performance. The gross takings were £4 17s 6d, from which only the actual expenses of the company were deducted.
The Karapiro Block will be open for selection to morrow, under the lease in perpetuity provision of the Land for Settlement Act, 1894. The sections range in area from 31 to 532 acres, and the rental from 7s to 9s per acre. This land is close to the township of Cambridge, and is of good quulity. Provided the terms of tenure are deemed satisfactory, there will, no doubt, be applications for the majority of the sections.
We understand that Mr W. H. Windsor, of Hamilton, is about to take over the Putaruru Hotel, on the Rotorua line, and will enter into occupation at an early date. Mr Windsor is widely known in sporting circles, and as " mine host " we predict he will be very popular with the travelling public. With the attraction of the Exhibition in Auckland this year, there should be an increased tourist traffic to the Lake district, and we hope Mr Windsor may reap considerable benefit therefrom.
We regret to state that Mr Edward Allen, of Pukekura, met with a nasty accident when returning from the Ohaupo sale ou Tuesday, which it is feared will confine him to the house for some little time. His horse put its foot into a hole in the road and fell, rolling over its rider and crushing his right foot. Dr. Murdoch prescribes perfect rest for some time, but thift must be very galling to Mr Allen, for he is not only President of the Waikato Farmers' Club, but also an active member of the Agricultural Show Committee, and at this juncture, when his services will be so much needed, it will indeed be hard for him to have to lay up. We trust he may be speedily restored, but expect if he is lucky enough to get a glance at the show, it will be from a conveyance.
Yesterday Messrs Knox and Whitehead, acting on behalf of Messrs Mann and Smith respectively, were engaged in valuing the furniture, etc., at the Commercial Hotel, Hamilton, preparatory to Mr J. Smith taking over possession of this well-known hostelry. The valuers expect to finish their work to-day, when Mr Smith will assume the proprietorship, and we have much pleasure in extending a welcome to Mr and Mrs Smith, both of whom are wellknown and popular in our town. We understand that considerable alterations and additions will be made in the house so as to provide extended and more complete accommodation, aud as Mr Smith intends to re-furnish the building throughout, this hotel will be second to none in the district, and at the hands of the new proprietor and his genial the travelling public may look for the best of good treatment.
On Tuesday afternoon a very pretty wedding took place in Cambridge, when Caroline (Carrie), third daughter of Mr Thos. Nixon, of that town, was united in the bonds of wedlock to William, the eldest son of Mr J. Preston, of Auckland. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. Canuell at the residence of the bride's parents in Vic-toria-street, a number of friends and relations being present. The bride wore a handsome cream silk lustre dress, trimmed with silk passementerie and chiffon, and decorated with the proverbial orange blossoms; she carried a pretty shower bouquet of clematis. She was attended by her sister Maudo and Miss Gertrude Preston (sister of the bridegroom) as bridesmaids, and the bridegroom was supported by his hrother Ernest and Mr Herbert Nixon (brother to the bride). For some time past the bride has been engaged in the Auckland Telephone Exchange, and amongst the presents, which were both numerous and costly, was a very handsome one from her fellcw-workers in the Exchange, wdiich consisted of a double set of carvers and a silver butter-dish. Mr Preston is engaged with the Union Steamship Company, and we understand the employed of that firm have made him a handsome present also. During the afternoon a large party were regaled with afternoon tea. and towards evening the happy couple left for Hamilton en route for Te Aroha and the Thames.
