TE AWAMUTU PUBLIC LIBRARY.
Thjc usual quarterly meeting of the Library Committee was held on Monday evening, there being present :—Messrs Andrew, Barker and Vause (chairman). Rekurt. The Chairman's report stated that since the last meeting a number of new books had been added, and the list of subscribers well kept up. The lease of the Library Reserve to Mr Cox, had been renewed on terms agreed upon at last meeting. An entertainment by the Pirongia Minstrels had "resulted in a small addition to the funds, and the thanks of the committee had been conveyed to the performers, The keeping in duplicate of all local news or references appearing in the Waikato papers had been discontinued, it having been thought better to keep a record from the fullest reports from either paper. One or two meetings of milk suppliers had been announced to have been held in the reading-room, for which no permission had been asked or arrangement made for the use of the room by the conveners, the Librarian had, therefore, been instructed to collect the usual nominal charges for the use of the room for Euch meetings. A large photogragh of the late .Sir George Grey suitably framed had been hung in the reading room, The finances were healthy and shewed a satisfactory credit balance. —The report was adopted. Painting.—An offer was received from Mr E. Cox to paint the whole of the library building for £3 3s, and this was accepted, the work to be done at once. Auckland Star.—lt was decided to discontinue taking the Auckland Star, and to add the Nineteenth Century to the list of Magazines supplied to the reading-room. Breach of Rules. A letter was read from Mr W. J. Culver in which he complained that he had been ordered by the Chairman to at once return a newspaper he had removed from the readingroom, on the promise that he would return it the next morning. He requested his name to be taken off the roll of subscribers, as the chairman had no right whatever to treat him as a thief and a rogue.—The Chairman thought no explanation or remarks were necessary from liim, the letter speaking for itself. He would only add that, as the Committee »vere aware, several of the newspapers supplied to the reading room had on recent occasions been missing, one only the week previous. The wtiter of the letter was quite unjustified in stating that he had been treated as "a thief and a rogue," and he (the Chairman) would refuse permission under similar circumstances, for anyone to remove the papers from the reading-room.—On the motion of Mr Andrew, it was agreed that the letter be received, and no further notice be taken of it. Business in Meeting-koom. The Chairman gave notice to move at the next meeting of the Committee, "That that portion of a resolution passed at the previous meeting, which prevented the meeting-room being let for any business purpose whatever not connected with the library, and thus blocking a means of revenue to the library be rescinded." This concluded the business.—(Own Corresponrbnt).
