HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. There were present: His Worship the Mayor, Mr W. Dey (in the chair), and Crs. H. Tristram, S. Davis. YV. Crawford, R. J. Gwynne, J. VV. H. Bright, D. Salmon, C. Tippin and R. F. Saudes. Teaffic Bridge.—The correspondence with reference to this bridge, as published in our last issue, was read Baths.—Mr Joseph Hintou was appointed caretaker of the baths at the same term as last year. Roll. —Applications were received for the transfer of the following names on the burgess roll, viz. : R. W. Dyer for G. Parr for Lot 367, Hamilton West; J. E. Tide! for E. A. Tidd for part Lot 279, Hamilton West ; aud James Devitt for Jno. Devitt for Lot 375, Hamilton East. —The Clerk was instructed to make the necessary alterations if the applications are found in order. Reports.—The Works Committee in their report recommend that the two catch-pits at the corner of Cook and Firth-streets be taken up and replaced with Gin. pipes ; that Mr Jones, the contractor for the new Hamilton Hotel, be informed that the Council has no gravel to spare for the purpose of screening, as requested : that Lot 323, of lr 18p, be purchased by the Council from the Bank cf New Zealand for the sum of £25, and that a sheep-race be erected in the saleyards, as per sketch plan submitted by the Town Clerk.—The report was adopted with the exception of the last clause, and in connection with the sheep pens it was decided to carry out, the resolution passed on October 11, 1897, to erect sheep pens on the east side of Victoria-street and remove the piggeries to the back of the present yards. The Foreman of Works' report with reference to work done was received. — The'poundkeeker reported that during the last quarter 22 horses and 40 head of cattle had been impounded, and 10 dogs registered, the total fees received being £4 lis 6d. —The report was received.— It was decided to call the dog registrar's attention to the number of greyhounds in the Borough, whereas only two are registered. . Visit of The Goveenoe. —A telegram was received from the Governor's Private Secretary, stating that His Excellency, accompanied by Lady Ranfurly, would arrive from Rotorua, in Hamilton, about 1.30 p.m. en Friday, 25th November, leaving early the following morning. He asked if it would be suitable for the citizen to receive Hi 3 Excellency.—The Mayor reported that he had replied that the arrangement would be suitable.—The Mayor and Crs. Sandes and Gwynue were appointed a committee to make arrangements for His Excellency's reception. Road. —Messrs Petersen and Vickera drew attention to the state of the Domain road, and asked that it be made fit for traffic.—The Foreman of Works stated that if the occupiers were compelled to clear the furze on the frontages very little would be needed to make the road passable.—The Clerk was instructed to give the necessary notice to the occupiers to clear the furze, and the consideration of the application was deferred until this is done. Payments.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—P. Munro, lCs : J. Wright, £1 Ss ; The Waikato Argcs, £8 8s ; Hamilton Gas Company, £5 5s ; W. Andrew, 18s ; J. Hinton, 10s ; J. Ridler, £1 12* ; R. Waite, £2 17s 6d ; T. Keep, £2 2s; Jas. Devitt, £2 Is 9d. LIBKABY.—The Mayor reported that with the Town Clerk he had seen Mr Currie with reference to the preparation of plans for the library, but he was unable to undertake the work, and they therefore had had plaus prepared by Mr Coyle, which were laid on the table. He moved that the rough pia'nshe. approved, and that himself and the Town Clerk be empowered to proceed with the erection of a building on the lines proposed, on the £IOO being paid into the borough account.- Seconded by Cr. Sandes and carried, the voting being—For : The Mayor and Crs. Saudes, Salmon, Bright, Gwynne and Davis. Against : Crs. Tristram, Crawford and Tippin. Licensing.—Cr. Tristram moved that the Town Clerk receive £5 per annum for the work done by him in the carrying out of the administration of the Alcoholic Liquors Sales Control Act.— Seconded by Cr. Gwynne and carried. Obstructions.—Cr. Tippin moved that the contractors for the erection of the new buddings in Victoria-street be notified to remove the obstructions on the footpaths and streets, or erect a suitable hoarding protecting their works, to be lit at night.—Seconded by Cr. Sandes and carried. HAMILTON DOMAIN BOARD. A meeting of the Hamilton Domain Board was held last evening. Present : Messrs Tristram, Davis, Gwynne, Bright, Tippin, Salmon and Sandes. In the absence of the Chairman Mr C. Tippin was voted to the chair. Transfer.—On the application of Mr G.J.Mann, the lease of Lot 453 was transferred to Mr L. Sutton, the rent having been paid to December next. By-laws.—The committee appointed to frame by-laws in connection with the Domain submitted for adoption certain portions of the Auckland Domain Bylaws, and the recommendation was adopted. It was resolved that the bylaws be drafted by Mr Swarbrick and be submitted to the Council at the next meeting to be passed. Gate.—lt was decided to remove the present gateway to the corner of Cook and Grey-streets, making that the main entrance to Sydney Square. Paviliok .—The committee reported that the renovation of the pavilion on the Square was in hand, and would probably be finished before next meeting-
