PRESENTATION TO MR J. KERR.
Some time ago when it became known that Mr John Kerr, agent of the Stock Department, was about to be transferred to Wairarapa, a number of his Hamilton friends determined that his going should be marked in a special manner. Mr Kerr has now been resident in our town for three years, and during that period has made more friends than fall to the lot of the ordinary individual. In his official capacity he has become widely known throughout the district, and has got into touch and worked harmoniously with the settlers. Owing to the illness of our local Inspector, we understand that the chief of his Department in Wellington has generously delayed the transfer, so that Mr Kerr's departure is indefinitely postponed ; in fact, wo trust that the services of a man so thoroughly acquainted with the district, and so generally esteemed, will be almost permanently secured to it. The sequel to the above is that a number of leading townsmen quietly assembled in Host Le Quesne's Waikato Hotel on Thursday evening last, when Mr Ross briefly stated that lie had been asked by Mr Kerr's friends there present, to hand to him a golden sovereign case. He would not particularise that gentleman's virtues. All present knew him and esteemed him. It would have been a pleasure to present him with such a mark of respect had he been leaving the district. It was a much greater pleasure to make the presentation now that he was remaining. Although completely taken by suiprise, Mr Kerr suitably and feelingly responded, and Mr G. Edgecunibe, in a few short and happy sentences, proposed " The guest of the evening." He culoeised Mr Kerr aud his work, aud hoped that for some considerable time to come he might remain a citizen of Hamilton. The usual loyal and patriotic toasts were duly honoured. Many present contributed to the evening's enjoyment by singing, icciting, etc., and a merry meeting broke up with the singing of " Auld Lang Syne " and a bumper toast to the host an hostess.
