THE STRANDED MAPOURIKA.

(BY TELEGRAPH--PRESS ASSOCIATION).

Gkkymooth, Last Night. THE enquiry into the stranding of the Mapcurika began to-day. Captain McLean said he came at halfspeed in a good line with the lights, and when three ships' lengths from the southern Tip Head the vessel was struck by a heavy roller and the helm refused to answer, the propellor being out of tli3 water. The vessel sagged and struek. He gave the order " Full speed ahead," but the ship was unmanageable, and, a fresli sea striking her, she was carried towards the North Tip. The order " Full speed asteiu " was then given, to endeavour to escape going on the wall. She struck shortly after on the North Tip. The steamer was kept at full speed astern, and gradually worked on to the north beach.
