THE STRANDED MAPOURIKA.
Mr Daniels wired to the Union Company, Wellington, on Tuesday ; " Heavy surf on the beach prevents any attempt to patch holes in the Mapourika. Have wires hawsers out from bow and stern for protection of the ship from southerly sea. Engine-room on bulkhead is now tight. A r essel came astern several feet last night. Hope to shift her farther aft this tide. Water being removed from engine-room meantime. Considerable south-west sea last night, but it did not effect the ship at all. Gear now on beacli ready for operations." (by telegraph—press association). Greymouth, Last Night. The Mapourika's position is about the same, but the ship was afloat last night fore and aft, although firm at the centre. The vessel is perfectly dry aft of the main rigging, and does not require the pumps. The damage is not so great as was at first supposed, and it is generally believed she will be got off without great difficulty. Wellington, Last Night. Mr Daniels wired as follows this evening to the Unio.i Company :—" Very heavy south-west wind and sea this tide (5 p.m.), and the vessel is working heavily. The engine-room is now tight and steam is available. So far as can be made out, no further damage has been sustained. There are sixteen feet of water at the bow at high lide, which gives the sea great power. The prospects of floating the vessel are of the gloomiest.''
