AUCKLAND NEWS.
(BY telegraph.— mess ASSOCIATION).. Auckland, Last Night. The Conciliation Court re the Painters' Union came to a rinding which has been accepted by both sides. One and a penny per hour is to be paid to competent workmen, but as there is a number of workmen incompetent they are to receive lid per hour for ouc year. The week is to be 44 hours, and boys are to be indentured. The decision is binding for two years. An additional batch of co-operative workmen is to be placed on the Makarau section of the North Auckland Trunk Railway. Gustavo Roth, a foreigner, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of stealing a bicycle. George Smith, aged 05, a gardener, living at Ponsonby, dropped dead while returning home from work to-night. He leaves a wife and large family. The Teachers' Court of Appeal, of which Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M., is chairman, was to have met to-day, to consider Miss Haselden'a case. This is an appeal against the decision of the Hoard of Education in dismissing Miss Haselden last June, from her position as teacher of the Kauaeruuga Girls' Public .School. The Board, however, object to the Appeal Court as at present constituted, as they consider that the appointment of Mr Ralph 1). Stewart as a member of the Teachers' Court of Appeal in this matter is illegal on the ground that he being President of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute—a party to the proceedings is thereby disqualified from acting as a member of the Court. The Board further object to any member of the New Zealand Educational Institute acting upon the same ground. The Board have no personal objection to Mr .Stewart, but they object to his acting in this capacity on the ground of his position as a member of the Institute which has taken up Miss Haselden's cause. The Board have passed a resolution instructing their solicitor (Dr. Laishley) to proceed with the prohibition proceedings in the Supreme Court forthwith, with a view to restrain the Appeal Court from adjudicating. The Appeal Court was accordingly adjourned to-day for a month in order to give the Board of Education time to institute prohibition proceedings.
