The Board of Education has made a proposal that there shall be one school for Hamilton in place of one on each side of the river as at present. It is matter for regret that the Hamilton East Committee has passed a resolution condemning the proposal. They will perhaps forgive us for suggesting that they have done this without having given sufficient utlention to the matter. It must be admitted that wherever the school were plsctd some children would have to travel a greater distance backwards and forwards than at present. There are two sites, however, one on each side of the river, in close proximity to the bridge, which, we understand, could be made available, both being Borough endowments. The one is situated on the West side adjoining the bridge, and the other the paddock on the East side leased by Mr Coates, and at present used by him for drying flax. A better site than this for a school could not be found, the ground is high and the soil porous. The amalgamation and the acquisition of the land we suggest would in all probability lead to the re-establishment of a High School. It is to be sincerely hoped that the two committees will not put any obstacles in the way of amalgamation. Prom an education point of view, the advantages of a large school over a small one are very great. In the first place the increased salaries command the services of a higher class of teachers, and in addition, there is a teacher for each of the standards, in place of one teacher's attention being divided between three classes. It is for this reason that the town schools have such an advantage over those in the country.
