The Conference of Postmaster-Generals, respecting the Pacific Cable, has resulted in nothing definite. WOMEN'S FRANCHISE. Melbourne, September 14. There was a spccialcall of the Legislative Council to deal with the Women Franchise Bill. The galleries were crowded with ladies. Petitions signed by ,SO,OOO women were presented in favour of the Bill. Mr Wrixon delivered a strong speech against the measure, which he declared was a delusion and a mistake, and would have prejudical etl'ect on dorrestic life. Mr Campbell said the Bill was the outcome of agitation by a few faddists. He had been advised from New Zealand that women suffrage had created a tremendous amount of discord in families. The second reading was negatived by 19 to 15. The galleries hissed the speakers.
