N.Z. DAIRY ASSOCIATION.
This following letter has been circulated : TO MILK SUPPLIERS. I have pleasure in informing you of my return to Auckland, after an absence of six months. I write to say that I am giving my at teutiou to the requirements of the industry in which we are mutually interested, and at once to notify you that while I have been upon my trip, and since I instructed my acting manager re rates for milk for the opening of the present season, I have developed proposals, which we shall at once put into force, for the extension of the principle which we adopted two years ago, of payment for milk in proportion to the supply at any given creamery. That is, what it is possible for us to save off expenses at any creamery we shall add to the amount to be paid to suppliers to that creamery.
The alteration will cause sub-clause (a) of provision 9 of the conditions of supply to be amended as follows: " Provided that the milk suppliers to any creamery which receives during the months from September to May inclusive a total quantity of milk equal to an average of gallons as below, of .PC per cent, butter-fat quality, for each calendar week during that period, shall, unless disqualified a 3 in the following subclause, receive at tha end of the season an additional payment, as below, per gallon upon all the milk which he has supplied during that period. Thus: Upon an average weekly supply to one creamery of 9000 gallons the extra payment shall be (}d) one farthing per gallon ; upon an average weekly supply to one creimcry of 0000 gallons.khe extra payment shall be (3/16d) threesixtecths of a penny per gallon ; upon an average weekly supply to one creamery of 4500 gallons the extra payment shall be (£d) one-eighth of a penny per gallon." The sub-clause (it) will, for the present season, also be amended so as to allow persons wdio commence to supply upon Monday, the 19th of September, and from that date to the end of May following to participate in these advances. This will allow everyoue to take advantage of these more favourable terms, which we have been unavoidably prevented from presenting earlier. I call your attention to the necessity for a reasonable supply of milk to your local creamery to enable us to minimise the expenses of dealing with it. Last season our largest station gave less than one half the supply received under oue roof in many of the Southern factories, while it actually took nine of our smaller creameries to produce what is considered an average supply for these more favoured places. Of course this means that we have had the expense of running nine establishments, in addition to the central, instead of one only. We have also had to bear the extra heavy cartage aud railage upon cream which has i-been altogether avoided by factories where milk is delivered direct. In the past the larger creameries have bonis a proportion of the extra costs of running the smaller ones. Wc now arrange, where the supply is sufficient to reduce the general cost of handling the milk, that the amount saved shall be given to the suppliers lo that creamery. The lesser places must be run upon their merits. We do not contemplate reducing prices to be paid tit any creamery, but for this season shall advance in the manner above set forth. This advance will represent an increase in the rate of payment for milk for the coming season, which will total about two thousand pounds above the prices set forth during my absence. It affords me much pleasure to give you this information. I regret if my absence from Auckland has caused any of our suppliers inconvenience. lam taking steps to learn if any dissatisfaction has arisen while I have been away. Upon full enquiry I will again communicate with you in sonic effective manner. In the meantime I.shall be glad of suggestions from you for our mutual advantage. —I am, etc., Wesley Si'RAGG, Manager. Auckland, September 9th, IS9S.
