(BY TKLEGEAPII—I'UKSS association). Nelsov, Last Night. William Lefoe, 27 years of age, formerly licensee of the Belgrove Hotel, committed suicide on Saturday by taking " Ruugli on Rats." He had been addicted to drink, and iu consequence his wife left him n. few mouths ago. Lefoe came over from Wellington on Friday and asked his wife to live with him again. She refused and hence the suicide. Wellington, Last Night. George Coleman pleaded guilty to forging and uttering a number of cheques, some for considerable sums. Probation was asked for, but the Judge said it was not a case for probation. The only question was whether he should not give a longer sentence than two years with hard labour. The Government has declined to accede to the request to bring in special legislation to enable the.«saleof spirituous liquors to take place at the Auckland Exhibition. Mr Justice Edwards has been granted two months' leave of absence to visit Australia on account of illhealth, provided his rbsence does not interfere with the business of the Arbitration Court. The Government has expressed itself favourable to an application to have the 13th October (Labour Day) proclaimed a public holiday, provided the various labour organisations throughout the colony agree to that date. Dunedin, Last Night. Samuel Nelson, au old colonist, died suddenly yesterday. He was attending service at the Green Island Presbyterian Church. Christchukch, LTst Night. The seaman Nelson, who was lost on the schooner Sir Henry, was knocked overboard off the Kaikouras in a heavy sea. He was a native of Sweden. A boy named R. J. Foster was thrown from his pony and had his skull fractured. He has since died.
