This is the first occasion that a pronounced Socialist has presided over the deliberations of the Congress. A great fire has occurred at Smyrna, the Custom-houses being destroyed. Messrs Prater, Luuu, and Lowe, the 'cyclists who have been touring the world, have returned to London. Speaking at a banquet in Sydney, Sir George Dibbs said all possibility of his re-entering Parliament had passed away. The Protectionist party, he said, were to some extent being chopped into mincemeat by Mr Barton and others. He declared that Mr Lyne, and cot Mr Barton, must be the recognised Leader.
