In His address to the Grand Jury the Chief Justice, referring to the case of the woman Jones, charged with deserting her children, said there was some doubt whether it was an indictable offence and whether the bill should be presented. Woods in August, 1595, was arrested at Wanganui and brought to Wellington, but escaped from the railway station, lie was recently arrested op another charge at Dunediu, and was recognised and sent up hers. He was convicted and sentenced to 15 months' imprisonment, the charge of escaping from custody being withdrawn. Jas. Jackson, only IS years of age, who pleaded guiity to arson and theft, was committed to Buruham, when 11 years of age. Last year there were four convictions against him for theft. He was sentenced to two years. George Carter pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, and received 15 months. Stephen Walsh pleaded guilty, and Wm. Aldridge, not guilty, to the theft of £IOO worth of jewellery, at Mist Bton. The former was remanded for sentence.

The death is announced of Allan McLean, aged Go. Deceased, who came to the district in the seventys, was widely known and respected along the East Coast. Ha was closely identified with sport and bred many successful racehorses.
