HAMILTON LIBRARY.

<» A meeting of the Hamilton Library Committee was held at the Council Chambers, last evoning. There were present :—His Worship the Mayor, Mr Wm. Dey (chairman), and Messrs P. E. Stevens, R. Parr, J. A. Young, Jas. Hume, R. F. Sandes, R. Bradley, W. C. Castleton, A. Swarbrick and C. J. W. Barton. The Mayor reported that he had laid the propositions of the committee before the Borough Council at last meeting. Building —The Chairman stated that the amount now in hand for the building was £2OO. —Mr J. A. Young proposed that the further consideration of the library building be postponed for 14 days, until the committee have laid before it a scheme, whereby it may consider the proposal to have a hall and library under one roof. The amount required for the hall would be he thought about £3OO, and this could be raised by meansof debentures —Mrßradly seconded. —MrP. E. Stevens opposed the idea.—Mr R. Parr did not think the plan a feasible one—The Chairman said the Council was not likely to look kindly upon the proposal unless the amount was raised by debentures. —Mr Hume thought it would be better to online their efforts to a library alone.—Mr Sandes paid tiie £2OO was not at the disposal of the committee, but in the hands of the Council. —Mr Swarbrick thought the adoption of the proposal would mean the postponement of the mitter almost indefinitely.— Mr Barton thought the committee could hard.y dictate to the Council. He thought the library should be built with a view to further extension.—Mr Young begged leave to withdraw his motion, stating that he only wished for an expression of opinion.—This was agreed to. —Mr Swarbrick moved that plans and specifications should he obtained as soon as possible for a building not to exceed £2OO, with a view to further extension. This was carried unanimously, and the Chairman and Secretary were appointed a committee to make arrangements re plans, etc.
