FOOTBALL.

HAWKE'S BAY V. POVERTY BAY

(BY TELEGRAni—PRESS ASSOCIATION). Giscorne, Last Night. The football match, Hawke's Bay v. Poverty Bay, was played this afternoon in fine weather. There was a large attendance, and the game, which was hardly fought, resulted in a win for the visitors by 10 points (two tries and a goal from a mark) to 7 (a goal from a mark and a penalty goal). The passing of the visitors was very good, though the teams were well matched in the forward division.

During the last week or so a rumour has been in circulation that the Huntly football team did not intend to fulfil their engagement with Hamilton on Saturday. Notwithstanding the fact that the representatives of the coalmining township, have no chance in the competition, we never for one moment thought they would fail to carry out the fixture. We noiv lcaru that we were quite correct in our conjecture, aud not only are the Huntly men coming ; but they intend to make a bitter fight, and one of the best teams that has represented that district for some time will be pitted against Hamilton's chosen on Saturday next. The match will be played on Sydney Square, Hamilton, and although we are not at the present time in a position to furnish the names of both teams, we hope to be able to do so in our next issue. That the game will afford an exciting stuggle, we are quite certain, and those who wish to witness the game of the season, should not fail to attend. Wo understand that an Auckland referee will have charge of the game and no doubt this will go a long way towards dispelling any quarrelling and bickering and give the match a friendly turn, which all wdio love the game would wish to see. The Hamilton Domain Board has given the Union permission to make a small charge for admission to the Square on the occasion, and we have no doubt the funds of the Union will be considerably augmented thereby.
