Tristram objected to the expenditure He was quite sure the majority of the ratepayers did not want a library. They could not even support the library they possessed at present, and the fact that the salary of the librarian was paid by a private gentleman was proof positive that a library was not wanted.— The Chairman said that some years ago the library was run by a committee, but the ratepayers were not satisfied with this ; they had taken it under the Act and foisted it on the Council, and now they would have to pay for it.—Cr. Tippen endorsed Cr. Tristram's remarks, and said he should certainly vote against the proposal. Cr. Sandes said the majority of the burgesses had contributed towards the fund willingly, and the country people had also subscribed liberally. He understood that the whole expenditure, including plans, etc., was to come out of the £2oo.—Cr. Slade thought the library they had at present was a disgrace to any town, and expressed his intention of supporting the motion. —The Chairman said there was little doubt the library was wanted. If the librarian's salary was behind, the Council was alone to blame. The ratepayers had taken over the library and they should pay the librarian's salary.— The motion was then put and carried, the voting being as follows :—For : The Chairman, Crs.
