AUCKLAND NEWS.
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION). Auckland, Last Night. At the inquest ou the Maori woman, Ruhio Poharama, at Rangiawahia, a native settlement north of Mongonui, who died under circumstances already published, the jury, after hearing the evidence, returned a verdict that " Deceased died after her confinement, and her death was either directly caused or greatly due to being immersed in cold water at so critical a period, and they greatly condemned the action of Niho Papata, the fohunga, and others in the. matter." What further action Inspector Hickson may take is dependent on the nature of Detective Madderu's report, that officer being on the spot investigating affairs. Mr B. Kent, local manager of the Alliance Insurance Company, has received a cable from the London head office, to proceed to Honolulu, in connection with the business of the company's branch in that island. He leaves by the Rotoiti to-morrow for Wellington, to catch the Vancouver steamer calling at Honolulu. At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Auckland Mining and Industrial Exhibition, Mr W. Ledingham was appointed deputy-president of the Exhibition during Mr Kent's absence.^ At a meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, a resolution was passed that all disqualifications be removed from horses, owners, jockeys and trainers for racing at unregistered meetings to date, except where the disqualifications have been imposed for mal-practiees.
