CABLE SUMMARY.
Sir Geo. Turner, Premier of Victoria, attends a conference of Premiers, to be held at Sydney a fortnight hence, to discuss the New Guinea land grant. At this conference it will be proposed that the colonies withdraw their direct contributions, to be replaced by the surplus revenue over expenditure, which has accumulated to about £30,000. In view of the want of consideration shown in connection with the land grant made to the New Guinea Syndicate, Sir George Turner has placed only £IOOO on the Estimates as Victoria's New Guinea contribution. ilr George Ruthveu Lehunte, Colonial Secretary at Mauritius, has beeu appointed Governor of British New Guinea, in succession to Sir William Macgregor. The House of Commons has reinstated the conscience clause in the Vaccination Bill, which was struck out in the House of Lords. Many miners are returning from the Klondike gold fields ; several with large fortunes. Three chousand men are travelling to the coast to escape starvation. The Premier of Victoria states that the Australian Government have been lor some months moving in connection with Pacific cable matteA The communications, however, areßßifidential. The Novoe Vremya states that King Menelik of Abyssinia has ceded to Russia the protectorate of Raheita. Newspapers in Rome claim that the territory belongs to Italy. Reiuforcements are proceeding from JVlombassa to Ras Jehul to suppress the rising in Somaliland. Guardial Singh, highly esteemed among the Sikhs, has been ciiarged with corrupt practices as a civil servant. Two witnesses in the case have been found murdered 125 miles apart.
