MAGISTRATE'S COURT, HUNTLY.
(Before Captain Jackson, S.M.) The Magistrate's Ccurt has been occupied for a couple of days bearing charges against the licensee of the Huntly Hotel, of alleged breaches of the Licensing Act. Mr Thos. Cotter, of Auckland, appeared for the licensee. The first charge preferred was that of keeping the Huntly Hotel open after hours on the 22nd April last. TIII3 case was dismissed, the evidence not going to show that the house had beeu kept open. A charge for a similar offence, alleged to have been committed on July loth, was also dismissed. The third charge was thai of permitting drunkenness on licensed premises on July 15th. This case was also dismissed. The cases are looked upon more in the light of persecution than anything else. In .April Sergeant Treanor, and in July Sergeant Walker were sent to Huntly. and the charges were the outcome of their visits. In each instance a concert or dance was being held in the district, and in the evidence it was conclusively proved that although persons were actually in the house at the time mentioned, they were visitors from Matahura and the surrounding districts, who had come into town for the cntcrtriuments, and had entered the house for the purpose of getting their belongings before leaving for home. The decisions of Captain Jackson met with general approval. _____________
