All the passengers were saved, owing to the magnificent coolness of the officers and crew. Mr Thomas Owen, Liberal member for the Launceston division of Cornwall, has been accidentally drowned. The deceased was chairman of directors of Thomas Owen and Co., paper and pulp manufacturers, and proprietor of the Western Mercury and Western Herald. The International Chess Congress is in progress at Vienna. Pillsbury, of the United States, and Dr. Tarrasch are leading. Hawker, the Australian shot, defeated the Hon. S. R. Beresford at the Nottinghill Gun Club's meeting for £IOO a-side, killing 81 birds out of 96. He also won the Members' £IOO Challenge Cup and £7O, killing seven birds in succession. Hawker, who shot brilliantly throughout the meeting, also won several minor prizes.
