KIHIKIHI.

♦ Star Hotel.—During the past week the license of this well-known house has been transferred, the new occupier being Mr T. Porter, late of Mercer, where he has been well and favourably known for many years as the popular host of the hotel there. Mr Maunder and family are, I am pleased to hear, not likely to leave this district, but will occupy the farm formerly known as Moncrieff's. I hope that the change will be a profitable one to Mr Porter. Accident.—The Rev. Walter Smith was the victim of what may yet prove a very serious accident on Sunday night last. He had mounted his horse in an enclosure adjoining the Presbyterian Church, where he had just conducted service, and, the night being very dark, when making for the gateway he collided with the wire fenx-e, and the barbed wire catching in one of his leggings he was thrown violently over the fence, and was carried into the Star Hotel in great pain. He is now suffering from an apparently serious injury to the back, being unable to rise, and is awaiting medical assistance. Weather.—The winter rains have at last set in, and we have experienced some bitterly cold, wet and stormy days of late. The roads are quickly being transformed into a state of mud and slush. Illnkss.—l am pleased to be able to report that Mrs Carroll, though not yet out of danger, is slightly improved in health. Mr Carroll lias our sincere sympathy in his family trouble, and anxious and numerous inquiries are daily made with regard to his wife's health.— (Own Correspondent).
