OHAUPO.
School Committee.—A meeting of the Ohaupo School Committee was held on Wednesday evening. There were preBent :—Messrs T. Prince (chairman), Roche, Edwards, Graham and Rauch. It was decided to bring under the notice of the Education Board that the gutters and spouting round the school-house want rc»Betting, as there was no fall for the water. It was also decided to cut down several more pine trees, to be used as firewood. Ngaroto Deainage District, An election of trustees for the above district was held here on Wednesday. Nearly every ratepayer in the district rolled up. The district to come under the Act is the Ngaroto basin, and extends from the Alexandra Road near Ohaupo, to the Te Rahu Crossroads, and then to Paterangi, and back to Ohaupo, so the district is surrounded by a road. I hold the opiniou with many others, that it is not wise to have so many small drainage districts j "as, sooner or later, most of the Waikato land will have to come under the Act, owing to the growth of willows in all the creeks, which, of course, obstructs the drainage. Every board costs a good deal of money to constitute, and bring under the Act, therefore, the districts should be made larger. Look at the Waipa River for instance and compare it to what it was 20 years ago ; now one can hardly see the river for willows. The river is narrower and deeper, consequently the water rises to a higher level, but sooner or later that river will have to be cleared. What I should advise is that if a drainage district is to be formed it should embrace a sufficiently large area to take in say three or four creeks, so that the one machinery would manage the lot. For instance, the district under immediate notice should have extended from the source of the creek (the Ngaroto lakes) to where it enters the Waipa River. Death.—l regret to have to record another death in this district. The wife of Mr E. Ellis, residing at Lake Road, passed away on Tuesday evening. The deceased had only been seriously ill two or three days. Previous to that she was troubled a little with heart disease, but nothing to cause anxiety. On Friday last she got a chill and an attack of influenza lollowcd, which, notwithstanding medical skill, ended fatally. Mr Ellis and his family came to this district some twenty-two years ago and settled on their farm at Ngaroto. I sincerely sympathise with the bereaved family in their great affliction. The late Mrs Ellis was a woman of sterling qualities, a good wife and a fond mother. She leaves a family of six daughters and one sun, nearly all grown up. The funeral took place on Thursday, and was largely attended by friends aud neighbours, the remains being buried in the Paterangi Cemetery. The Rev. J. Kayll, of the Church of England, officiated at the crave.—(Own Correspondent).
