Davis' residence, estimated cost £1; that two wooden citch pits be placed in the saleyards ; that the foreman of works be empowered to plough the edge of the road in Victoria-street three and a-half chains, near the railway station ; also a small portion of Heaphy Terrace, near the Hamilton East School; and that the footpath from Mr Hatrick's shop to Mr Manning's house be formed and gravelled.—The report was received and adopted.—The Foreman of Works gave details of work done siuce last meeting, and in accordance with instruction given reported on the cost of screened gravel for Victoria-street. The co3t after the pit is properly opened up would be 2s per yard, and cartiug Is 3d, making a cost of 3s 3d per yard. The cost of limestone tvould be : Freight 2s 4d per ton, quarrying 3s 9d, breaking 2s 6d, carting Is, tindiug Is, making a total for three-quarters of a yard of 10a 7d or 14s for one yard. The estimate for 32 chains with screened eravel would be £ll2 ; and with stone £448, this would be 20 yards to the chain, with a spread of 18 feet wide.—Cr. Sandes said that the question was one of cost; but the Council would always have to afford to put gravel on the streets, and though the prime cost would be a little more with the screened gravel, when once it was done there would be little expense for repairs. the roads could not be done at once ; but as they required repairing, the work should be done with the screened grave!. The screenings need not go to waste, as they would be useful for footpaths and building purposes.— The Mayor said one question was whether they had a pit which would give sufficient gravel when screened.—The Foreman of Works said that plenty of good gravel for screeuing could be obtained if the Council were to re-enter on two acres of the paddock leased by Mr Coates in Hamilton East, and there was also a suitable pit at lot No. 11 West. The Cambridge road, and Galloway-street required about 120 loads of gravel yearly, and he thought it would be advisable to make the centre of these roads up with screened str.tf.— Cr. Sandes moved that for the future the Foreman of Works be instructed to use only screened gravel on those parts of the streets with the heaviest traffic—This was secouded by Cr. Salmon.—Cr. Tippin was in favour of using the screened gravel on the worst parts of Victoria-street.—Cr. Gwynne thought that at present it was only intended to deal with Victoria-street, as the whole of the traffic of the borough, was centred in this portion of the street. —Cr. Tristram did not think they should confine it to Victoria-street, but. should use the screened material wherever necessary.—The motion on being put was carried unanimously.
