WAIKATO MOUNTED INFANTRY.
Owing to the heavy rain whioh fell on Saturday morning, the volley-firing which was to have been held had to be abandoned, and the corps was formally dismissed by Capt. Reid. In doing so, the Capt. thanked the men for tbeir attendance, and complimented them on their excellent behaviour during the encampment. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded him on the proposition of Sergt. Higginson. Cheers were also given for the Captain, Lieut 3. Hunt and Hurd-Wood, aud the non-commissioned officers. At a meeting held for the purpose, it was decided, on the strong recommendation of Capt. Coleman, to adopt the kharkee uniform, instead of the navy blue previously agreed upon. The reaf kharkee is not the wretched, flimsy material at present worn by the men, but a handsome fawn serge, which is serviceable alike either in summer or wintei. It is probable that the soft felt hat, similar to those worn by the contingent which went to England at Jubilee time, will be chosen in place of the ungainly helmets now in use. It was also decided to hold a volunteer ball on a date to be fixed, and a committee consisting of the officers and Messrs W, H. Hume, W. Wallace, A. B. Heather, H. Davis, A. Livingstone, C. Cowley, and A. Chappell, was appointed to make the necessary arrangements. Capt. Coleman left by train yesterday morning en route for Wellington. During his stay in the township the captain made many friends, who will be pleased to renew the acquaintance.
