FIRES.
(by telegraph—press association). Dtjnedin, Sunday. A fire broke out this morning in the soap works portion of McLeod Bros.' (Limited) aoap and candle works. The watchman left about six a.m., and the fire was discovered about half-past seven. The soap factory was completely gutted ; but the walls and divisions effectually prevented the fire from spreading to the candle factory. The damage is estimated at about £4OOO. Ihe premises, stock, etc., are insured for about £3500, distributed over several offices. The particulars of the insurances are not yet obtainable. The fire will not interfere with Messrs McLeod Bros', operations, as the company have another complete plant in the Albiou soap works. Wellington, Last Night. The stables at the Taita Hotel, Hutt Valley, have been burned ; but the hotel was saved after some trouble. The loss id estimated at £290. Napier, Last Night. A fire at Hastings yesterday destroyed the stables occupied by the racehorses Sioner, Social Pest and others. The animals were cily got out with difficulty. The office of the Wairoa Guardian was burned down yesterday morning. It was insured for £250.
