PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.

Thk monthly meeting of the above | Council took place at Mnrrinsville on Wednesday, when there were present : Crs. Chcpmell (in the chair), Oavin, Herries, Aitken, King, Hunt, McCaw and Harrison. Goldkikluh Revenue.—The allocator of goldfields revenue, Thames, advised that he had placed £2l 7s Sd to the Council's credit, being revenue from this source frr the period ended 30th April. Bank Balance.— The Clerk reported that the overdraft at bank at date amounted to £496 Ss 9d. Licensing Expenses.—ln reply to the Council's request to the Bay of Plenty Licensing Committee for details of expenses incurred, a memo, was received, showing expenses as follows : Salaries of clerk to the committee and clerk of local body having jurisdiction. £45 ; members' travelling expenses, £4O ; printing and advertising, £1 10s 3d ; total, £B6 10s lid.—The Council considered the salaries paid to the clerks most excessive, but decided to pay a share of the ex penses as demanded. Slaughter-house License. The license to slaughter at Waihou at preseut held by J. Walls was, at his request, transferred to A. Sweeney. Dog Tax.—A. Bremner, collector, sent in an exhaustive report on the various unregistered dogs in his district, and hi& persistent but unavailing efforts to collect the tax from the owners.—The Council decided to instruct the clerk to notify owners of unregistered dogs that the collector had been authorised to take proceedings against them. Valuation.—The Council having asked the Valuation Department for a note of the valuation for the purpose of estimating the rates required for the coming year, the following memo, was received, showing the valuation of the county, exclusive of Crown and native lands :-Waitoa Riding, £289,079 ; Te Aroha Town District, £52,290 ; Te Aroha Outlying District, £59,996 ; Matamata Road District, £119,172; Taotaoroa Riding, £31,511 ; Patetere Riding, £235,268 ; , total, £787,316, which is an all-round increase of £146,607 on the values fixed previously. .The only district which shows a reduction in valuation is that of the Taotaoroa Riding, where the values have receded to the extent of £8,782. Fina>ce Committee.— Crs. Harrison, Aitken, Gavin and the Chairman were appointed a Finance Committee to prepare estimates for the ensuing year, the committee to meet at Te Aroha on 20th Jul y- ~ r. n Te Akoha-Gordon Road. Crs. Gavin and Herrie3 having been requested to interview Hon. Mr Cadman re a further subsidy for this road, reported that they had done so. _ Mr Cadman promised a grant of £SO on condition that the interested bodies com tributed a similar sum. The sum of £4O having been already secured, Council, on the motion of Cr. Hemes, decided to give £lO, in order that the Government subsidy be secured. Montague's Drain. —B. Montague complained of Council's refusal to accede to his request made at last meeting. He offered, by way of compromise, if Council would allow him a set of 9in pipes, to lay them himself, make an inlet and outlet, and maintain the crossing so that Council would be at no further expense. —Council agreed to allow the pipes, as requested. Revuhsts kor Drainage \\orks.— Mr M. MHlcahy complained of damage done by water from drain along main road flooding his property. He asked Council to make a drain about five chains long, from this drain to one already runDing through his land, and so lead the water into it.—Council agreed to do this, Mr Mulcahy to keep his outfall cleaned out.—Messrs Murphy and McKenzie wrote asking that Council open up and clean out the drain running between their properties, so as to drain off water. They were willing to pay half the coat of the work.—The Council agreed to do this, on that condition. Flax-mill Dam, Gordon.—Foreman Wattam reported that the heavy rain on 20th May had washed away this dam, and the water is now divided. In order to preveot damage being done to the road in any subsequent flood, the foreman waß instructed to get the damage repaired. Accounts. The following accounts were passed for payment:—T.
