HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The usual meeting of the Hamilton Borough Couucil was held at the Council Chambers, Hamilton, last evening. There were present :—His Worship the Mayor (Mr Wm. Dey), chairman, and Crs. D. Salmon, Chas. Tippin, T. Slade, R. J. Gwynne, S. Davis, H. Tristram and R. F. Sandes. Hotel Licenses.—Mr T. Kirk, Clerk of the Licensing Committee, wrote notifying that licenses had been issued to the four hotels in Hamilton. Approach.—Mr Jos. Frear's application for an approach to his property through Garden Place, was referred to the Works Committee to report at next meeting. Hamilton Mails. Several letters were received from Mr S. B. Biss, Chief Postmaster, regarding the closing and the delay in the delivery of mails at the Hamilton Post Oflice, which was brought under his notice by a committee appointed for the purpose. The Chief Postmaster informed the Council that he was investigating the matter and would inform them if the suggested improvements could be carried out. In a subsequent letter he asked that a plan of the Borough boundaries should be forwarded to him, and stated that the question of mails, etc., had been fully considered. The additional facilities asked for could not be arranged without an extra mail service, and an increase in the staff at the Hamilton Post Office. He found, he said, that the Raglan mails were always sorted by 4.30 p.m., or on arrival of the coach. — The letters were received.

Valuation Roll—Mr E. F. Darby wrote asking that Mr Win. Hayes' name should be substituted in place of his own on the Valuation Roll for Lots 302, 303 and 304, Hamilton East.—The clerk was instructed to make the alteration as soon as the necessary formalities had been complied with. Accounts.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—W. Andrew, lis; P. Munro, 18s; Waikato Argus, 19s 6d ; R. Waite, £l9 13s 10£d ; J. Ridler, 7s; Gas Company, £5 5s ; J. Hinton, 10s ; Jas. Devitt, £1 14s 6d. Repairs.—Several necessary repairs on the footpath between the Commercial Hotel and Rostrevor-street, and also at the corner of Rostrevbr and Victoriastreets, brought under the notice of the Council by Cr. Gwynne, were left in the hands of the Works Committee to attend to.

Gravel. Cr. Sandes said he had noticed lately that the gravel placed upon the streets was of a most inferior character. The foreman had suggested that screened gravel only should be placed on the main streets. The screening would coat Is, but he (Cr. Sandes) thought this extra amount would be compessated for by its durability, and the fact that little or none would be washed into the watertables, and theretore they would not require cleaning so often. He proposed that the foreman should be asked to make a special report upon this question at the next meeting of the Council. —This was carried unanimously. Rate. —The Clerk intimated that it would be necessary for the Council to notify its intention to strike . rate, and read the following statement of estimates :—Valuation roll, £7714 10s at Is in the £, £385 14s Gd ; at Is 3d in the £, £482 3s a difference of £93 3s Hd ; estimated receipts from all sources, £970 ; estimated expenditure, without streets, £750, leaving £220 only to be put on streets ; overdraft at 31st March, 1898, £9BO. —Cr. Tippin proposed that the rate for the ensuing 12monts should be Is in the £.—Cr, Tristram seconded. — This was carried unanimously. Reports.—The poundkeeper and dog registrar reported as follows :—2l dogs, £5 5s ; 1 greyhound, 10s ; impounded, 9 horses, 9s ; 7 cattle, 3s 6d ; total, £6 7s 6d. This, as well as the foreman's report, was adopted, Lot 309, Hamilton East.—Mr Wheelan wrote upon the subject of Lot 309, Hamilton East, which he had hased from the Council many years ago. He had lately sold his interest in the allotment; but the Registrar of Deeds had refused to register the deed, as the lease was irregular,—not bearing the seal of the Council. He asked for a proper title, in order that the lease might be registered.—The Council resolved to return the deed to the solicitor who drew it up, and request him to rectify it. DOMAIN BOARD. The Domain Board met immediately afterwards, the same members being present. The only business was an application from Mr Bunting, of Hamilton East, to have the land lying between Silarystreet and the East Cemetery Road cut up and put up for lease,—This matter was referred to the Endowment Committee.
