Samuel Plimsoll, father of the Shipping Law Reform, is seriously ill. Prince Henry of Orleans has abandoned his proposed expedition up the Nile. Dr. Reitz, ex-President of the Orange Free State, has been appointed to succeed Dr. Leyds as Transvaal Secretary of State. Turkey has agreed to pay Russia £300,000 of the Russo-Turkish war indemnity in cash, and the balance in three annual instalments. A movement has been initiated in London to erect a memorial of Gladstone. The sum of £'soo has already been subscribed, Sbam Mahomed, leader of tho gang which murdered Mr Graves, telegraph official, in the country adjacent to the Persian Gulf, has been executed. Tho committee of tho Yorkshire County Cricket Club has endorsed the proposal of . Lord Hawke that the Marylebone Club should select players and grounds for test matches, Fugland v: Australia, and that one match be played in Yorkshire. The Times states that the Italian Government intend to suppress _ all Roman Catholic clubs and associations in Italy. Sir Charlas Gavan Duffy, in a letter to the Times, warmly protests against the suggestion that Britain should surrender New Guinea to Germany in return for concessions elsewhere. He says it would be less disastrous to admit Germany's in> fluence in affairs at Pretoria, or to surrender the British right of preemption at Delagoa Bay. London, June 2. The Capo Government has ordered 10,000 Lee-Metford rifles, 15 field guns and 10 Maxims. Belgrade, June 1. There it> much unrest in Servia, Prince Alexander's ill-health is encouraging an intrigue on the part of the Prince of Montenegro and Karageorgvitch to secure the succession. Athens, Juue 1. The Turkish evacuation of Thessaly is completed, and the Greeks have reoccupied the territory. Rome, June 2. Canavaro. Madrid, Juue 2. A run has occurred on Spanish banks, the holders of notes changing them for coin. This has caused the Government to buy silver and largely prohibit . its export. Tho Government has also authorised an internal loan of a theusand million pesetas. San Francisco, June 2. The schooner Lady Jane Grey, bound from Seattle to Kotzebuc Sound, has foundered. Thirty-four persons on their way to Klondike were drowned.
