CABLE SUMMARY.
In the Canadian House of Commons, in reply to a question as to whether any advance had been made in the negotiations for laying a Pacific cable, Sir B. J. Cartwright, Minister of Trade and Commerce, said he had not abandoned hope of success, although Australia was far more distinctly interested in the matter than Canada.
The Archbishop of Canterbury delivered an address on temperance before the General Assembly of the Cqurch of Scotland. The Moderator warmly thanked him for the address, and said if the memory of the events which kept communions apart were buried in oblivion, the force of the spiritual attraction would bring the churches nearer.
Differences between the Marquis Visconti Venosta, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and SignorZanardelli, the Minister of Jnstice, in connection with the recent riots at Milan, has provoked a crisis in Italy. The Marquis di Budnii has, in consequence, resigned, and is now reforming the Cabinet. The Marquis Visconti Ve« mosta desired the institution of a stringent press law, when Signer Zanardelli claimed authority in certain cases to revoke the Crown exequator to bishops of the Church of Eome. The French newspapers advise the strengthening of the defences at Noumea owing to the proximity of Australia.
