INFANTICIDE.
(BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, Thursday. Tuk body of a newly-born infaDt has been found in a bed in a house at Carterton, with its throat cut.
An unmarried woman, named Madeline Cross, the daughter of a Wellington resident, lias been arrested in connection with the outrage. Carterton, Last Night.
Madeline Cross, who was arrested yesterday ou a charge of murder, was a domestic servant, aged 18. The body of the infant was found on Wednesday night quite dead, with its throat cut open with a pair of scissors. The accused was confined on Sunday during the absence of her employers, who were away from home all day. She disposed of the after traces, but was too ill to take the body away.
The accused came here from Wellington less than six mouths ago, and her condition was unsuspected. THE INQUEST. Wellington, Last Night. At the inquest the evidence showed three wounds in the throat made with a pair of scissors. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony, that death resulted from hemorrhage ; but whether it was due to the wounds in the throat or to the untied umbilical cord there was no evidence to show.
