CLARKE'S GULLY EMBANKMENT.

Our YVhatawhata correspondent writes: —I regret to report that the pipes recently put in by the Waipx County Council at Clarke's Gully have failed to carry off the drainage water from the surrounding hills, the whole affair being swept away by the moderately-heavy downpour which set in on Friday last. The embankment gave way on Saturday, when a gap, fully twenty-five feet in width and down to the original bottom, was cut clean out by the water. One tet of pipes lies in pieces about the gully, and the remaining set, though still fixed in the side of the embankment, seems to have mostly broken up A more striking illustration of the folly of the Council authorities in attempting to get over this place with pipes and' an embankment could scarcely be imagined, the present wash-out being an exact repetition of what occurred at the same spot over twenty years ago. Unfortunately a considerable amount of money has been expended in pipes and labour, and the road is now in the same position as after the unlucky fire which burnt the bridge. It is to be hoped the Council will lose no time in erecting another bridge or large box culvert, which if made, say, six feet square would answer the purpose and be cheaper. Fortunately the creamery is about to close down and the local traffic over the road will be comparatively small.
