DEATH OF MR J. B. HARKER.

Genuine expressions of sorrow and regret were common yesterday morning when it became known that Mr J. B. Harker, the well-known watchmaker and jeweller of this town, had at an early hour passed over to the great majority. During the last few weeks a wave of influenza has swept over the district, and unfortunately Mr Harker appears to have been attacked in a most severe manner. The first attack soon passed off, and just a week ago to to-day he was about town, but he certainly looked far from well. On Monday he was again about, and we understand he spent the evening with some friends. Whether he again caught cold going home is not known, but he suffered a relapsa, and for the last few days has been in an unconscious condition. Dr, Brewis was attending him, and did all that human skill cm do to preserve life ; but his efforts proved unavailing, and the sufferer passed peacefully away yesterday morning. Deceased, who was only 31 years of age, was the eldest son of Mr Jas. Harker, of Franktou. He served his apprenticeship with MrS. McLernon, now ot Gisborne, and on the departure of that gentleman took over the business, which he has conducted in a most creditable manner ever since. He was a steady, industrious young man, and very popular among those who kuew him well. Great sympathy is felt for the aged parents in their affliction, and we can only offer our quota with the rest. Tne funeral will leave his late residence, Frankton Road, for the Hamilton West Cemetery at 3 p.m. to-morrow (Sunday) afternoon. Our Cambridge correspondent telegraphed last night that Mr Harker's sudden death has been a great shock to his friends, and much sympathy is felt for the family.
