PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Council was held at Morrinsville on Wednesday, when there were present: Crs. Chepmcll (in the chair), Harrison, Hunt, Aitken, Farmer, Gavin, Herrie3 and McCaw. Dog Registration.—lt having been reported that certain parties had not yet registered their dogs, the Council decided that unless all fees were paid to the registrars at once, informations will be laid. Licensing Expenses.—The clerk of the Tauranga County Council requested payment of £ll 0s 4d, being proportion of expenses of the Bay of Pl&nty Licensing. Committee for the year ending 31st March, 1898, and £ls Is 4d, being proportion of the cost of the ejection of the Licensing Committee for the same district —1 he Council being of opinion that the total cost was somewhat excessive, it was decided to ask for details of the expenditure. Overdraft—The Clerk reported that the overdraft at the bank at present amounted to £4lB 16s Id.

Slaughterhouse at Waitoa.—The application of John Walls for a slaughtering license in this district, was adjourned from last meeting, in order to allow of report on objections raised by MrN. A. Larney.—Walls notified the Council that he had now severed his connection with the district, and had let the place to Mrs Warren.—The Council decided to refuse Wall's application, Gordon-Waiiaroa Road.—The Gordon Settlement Association, on the Council's recommendation, wrote to various bodies asking for assistance in the maintenance of this road. Replies were received as follows :—From Assets Realisation Board offering £lO ; from the Railway Department, stating that the matter was under consideration ; from the Matamata Road Board, offering £lO, on condition that the Government give £ for £, and that the Piako Council would undertake the spending of all the money.—The Council decided to inform the Matamata Road Board that the road had now been duly formed, and that they (the Board) must now undertake its maintenance. Katikati Track.—On the motion of Cr. Hemes, it was decided to request the Tauranga County Council to have the scrub cleaned off this track. MoLeod's Contract. —A lengthy discussion took place as to whether a fine for overtime should be enforced in this case, tRe general opinion being that owing to the inconvenience and delay experienced by Mr McLeod and the satisfactory nature of his work, no fine should be inflicted.—lt was ultimately decided that a nominal fine of Is be inflicted, an amendment that the fine be increased to 10a being put to the meeting and lost. It was also decided not to admit any claim for extras. Waiohongomai Tramway. —An appli cation was received from the Rev. Jos. Campbell asking for permission to take 50 tons of quartz over the tram, and undertaking to make good any damage done in usage.—This permission was granted, details of terms to be arranged by Crs. Gavin and Herries, to whom the Council remitted all matters in connection with the working of the tramway. Foremen's Reports.—Mr G. Mahood reported that the bridges on the RotoruaTirau Road wero dangerous for heavy traffic, the stringers of Orakau Bridge being completely rotten. On the Cam-bridge-Napier Road between Tirau and Gorton, and on the Cambridge-Tauranga Road between Taotaoroa Hill and Norris' Corner, the ti-tree and scrub was almost blocking the road and would require cutting down.—The Council authorised the employment of an extra man for this work and instructed the foreman to repair the bridges as suggested by him. They also decided to advertise the bridges in question as being unsafe for heavy traffic. Geo. Wattam ,reported that a few loads of gravel would be required for either side of the new bridge at Walker's, Wairakau. He had inspected the drain at Borrie's, and thought the cleaning should be done as requested by Borrie, as it would benefit the Connty road.—The Council decided that these works should be done.

Tenders.—The following tenders were received for grading two cuttings, lifting and resetting set of pipes and five chains of formation near Gage Brown's, at Shaftesbury:—James Orr, £6; D. McCarthy, £5 10s. —McCarthy's tender was accepted. Painting Piako Bridge.—Cr. Gavin's action in accepting H. Gallagher's tender to do this work for £l7 was confirmed.
