TAMAHERE.

» Recently a social and concert were held in the schoolroom in honour of Mr and Mrs Wheeler, who have so long lived in the district and promoted its interests and welfare. The address had not come to hand, but the chairman, the Vener-< able Archdeacon Willis, presented the purse of sovereigns. Before doing so, he expressed the pleasure the people of Tamahere felt at being present to evidence their appreciation of the services rendered. Mr Wheeler had for fifteen years acted as lay reader, and had always been found ready to cheerfully fulfil the many duties which devolved upon him. The address, which embodied the sentiments he had expressed, would be forwarded as soon as it arrived. Mr Wheeler, on behalf of himself and wife, returned thanks in a short and manly speech, in which he heartily thanked those present for the compliment they had paid him. " For He is a Jolly Good Fellow " was then heartily sung by the assemblage. The ladies and gentleman who contributed to the musical portion of the entertainment were: Miss Broome as pianist, and Misses McPheraon, M. Whitaker, Dean and Russell as vocalists. Mr Dean and Mr Ryder also sang. Mr Morgan contributed a recitation. Mrs Gribole and the Misses Hunt, Mair and Steele performed in a charade. The following ladies were the Ladies Committee, to whom are due the success of _ the function : Mrs Barugh (in the chair), " Miss Barwell (secretary), assisted by Misses Hyatt, Broome, Raynes, Hunt, Rhodes, Main, Mrs Way and many others.
