»■ RAILWAYS UNDER MILITARY CONTROL. VATICAN FAVOURS REPUBLIC. TEMPORAL POWER OF THE POPE. (by electric telegraph—copyright). Rome, May 11. The Italian Socialists and Republicans have planned a revolt on a large scale, iucluding Switzerland and 23 Italian provinces. Cannon mowed down the Milan rioters, 1000 being killed. Thirteen barricades were erected in Milan. The women incited the mob and shouted, " Throw the nuns from the barricade," because the nunnery closed its doors against the flying people. The cavalry rescued the nuns. A strike has occurred among men employed on the railways at Milan. The strikers seized the central station in the city and stopped all traffie. Two hundred rioters have been arrested. During the rioting in Milan the rioters and public shouted, " Down with the gentlefolk and officials." Serious rioting occurred at Naples. Barricades were erected in the streets. The troops shot down several of the rioters. Gunsmiths' shops in Rome have been closed as a precautionary measure. There are evidences of a conspiracy to establish in Italy a federal republic on the model of Switzerland. Rome, May 12. In consequence of disaffection among the railway employees, the Italian Government has placed the whole of the railway system under military control. Military officers now superintend the traffic. Army reservists are now serving on the railways, and will resume their uniforms. A number of Socialistic newspaper editors have been arreited for inciting the people to revolt. Many Italians in Switzerland are returning to their own country, and are assembling at Chiasso, a Swiss village near Como, for the purpose of considering their attitude in regard to the revolutionary outbreak. London, May 12. The Times, referring to the revolutionary movement, states upon the authority of diplomatists, intimately acquainted with the byways of clerical policy, that the recognised aim of the Vatican is to co-operate with the Socialist and Republican parties, with the view of securing the overthrow of the House of Savoy, in the hope that the establishment of a Federal Republic in Italy will pave the way for the re-establishment Of the temporal po»ver of the Pope.
