Tiik following ileitis were published in our Daily Extra on Thursday, and are reprinted so that those of our subscribers who may not have seen the extra may keep themselves posted up in the progress of the war : Hongkong, May 4. The Chinese residents at Manila are in a state of panic. They applied to the British Consul for protection. The Consul was willing to afford them protection, but the Spanish authorities refused their permission. The authorities at Washington ridicule the statement that Manila was fired by the use of petroleum bombs. It is believed that the Spaniards applied torches to the kerosene bonds and other buildiugs in fulfilment of their threat to leave the city a heap of ruins. The San Francisco naval authorities have been ordered to send two of the largest ships available to Manila immediately, with supplies of coal for Admiral Dewey's squadron. Washington, May 4. The Spaniards have surrendered Manila to the Americans, but the native insurgents are forming a provisional government in the Phillippines. Five thousand troops sre to be sent to garrison the islands, which, in the event of Spain not paying the indemnity, America proposes to sell to England. Volunteers for service in the American army include 50,000 Jews. New York, May 4. The news of the American victory at Manila was read in the New York j theatres between the acts. The audiences displayed great enthusiasm, cheered, and sang patriotic songs, ending, in several cases, I with "God Save the Queen."
