Thb Waikato Argus Office. Wednesday. MR W. J. HUNTER'S OHAUPO SALE. On Tuesday at Mr W.J. Hunter's sale, about '250 head of cattle were yarded, most of them of a good class and quality ; about a dozen dairy cows were offeted, for which there was a good demand for any that were young, and of a good class and close to profit. Grown steers were well represented, a line of about 100 from the King Country, were really good, and in splendid condition, showing little the worse after their long drive, but the tone of the market was very dull indeed, for that class of cattle, and conaequently many were passed. Stores and young stock were neglected, but beef waa plentiful and sold well, fat steers making £6 6s, and good beef heifers up to £4 15s. There was not a large at teudenee, and graziers were cautious, owing to the scarcity of feed. The following are the prices :—Dairy cows, from £3 9s to £4 5s ; calves (mixed eexes) up to 198 ; four-year-old steers, in fresh condition and good quality, from £3 18s 6d to £4 10s ; three-year-old steeis, very good, from £3 to £3 4a ; coarse two-year-old steers, £1 ; two-year-old heifers, £2 2a ; fat steers, from £4 15s to £6 6s ; fat heifers, from £3 7s to £4 15s. The position of the world's markets during the past month has gradually become easier now that prospects of a good harvest—at least iu the United States—appear to be favourable. Of course there is still time for many changes to occur in the outlook, but at the moment, owing to bountiful rains, the crops, es!>ecially those on the Pacific Slope, aie ooking remarkably well. According to the weekly published figures, there is a very large increase both in the quantity afloat for the Continent and that for the United Kingdom, indicating that home stocks have been reduced to a minimnm, and a strong demand on outside sources of supply. Argentine and India are now the arbiters of prices, and will continue so until July-August, when their shipments become insignificant beside those of Calif orxra. These countries have both heavier cropa than anticipated, and unless some unforeseen political erupt'on bursts, or crop prospects in America and the Continent become unfavourable, the tendency of Mark Lane quotations will be to fall, which must necessarily re-act on the colonial market. Locally the market has remained in a quiescent Btate for the past month, quotations touching as low as 4s for temperate and 4s OJd for northern milling samples. Millers have been shy buyers owing to their large stocks, and very little has been done. The export move in flour by millers has, however, tended to strengthen the position a little, and to-day 4s O.ld could be obtained for temperate and 4s Id for northern, f.a.q. grain, although, as a matter of fact, not ,much is obtainable at these rates. April and May have usually been marked by comparatively high rates, bat stocks appear far too heavy to allow of any great improvement at present. Crjps prospects will, of course, bear some influence upon market rates as the season advances, aud growers anxious to hold must natural y be cautious in following the pro!able coarse of valuei.—Victorian Exchange.
