THE ORPEN CASE.

Auckland, Last Night. By the San Francisco mail the police authorities received news from Detective Madden, who was sunt to America to bring back Dr. A. H. Orpen, apprehended there on a chatge of murder, arising out of an criminal operation on a young woman, to the effect that Orpen was still in custody at San Francisco, l-eing remanded from time to time, aivaiting the arrival of the original papers in the case which were sent from New Zealand to the Secretary of State for the Colonics. Certified copies of the papers had been sent to San Francisco, but objections were raised on behalf of Orpen, and the ordinal papers were being awaited fiom London, when the mail left.
Inspector Hiekson believes the application for the extradition of Orpen wi'l coino on at the Criminal Courts there about the end of this mouth, and he considers it probable that the police will succeed in their efforts to bring the accused to Auckland.
